Marcelo Accepts 4-Month Prison Sentence For Tax Fraud

Real Madrid defender Marcelo is the latest victim to fall prey to the hands of Spanish authorities over evading tax.

The Brazil international on Tuesday, September 11, agreed a four-month suspended prison sentence and will cough out KSh 87.1 million.

Earlier, UK Sun reported that Real Madrid’s public prosecutor revealed the alleged irregularities were linked to the use of foreign firms to handle the earnings of his image rights.

The public prosecutor claims that Marcelo had used the structure in seeking an “illegal fiscal benefit”.

According to El Mundo, Marcelo managed to reduce his fine to about 40 percent of the original amount he stands accused of defrauding.

It is understood that Marcelo was accused of loaning his image rights to a Uruguayan firm called ‘Birsen Trade SA’, of which the Brazilian star admitted to.

However, Marcelo will not be serving time behind bars because first offenders in Spain do not serve jail terms for offenses of two years or less.

The 30-year-old joins ex-Madrid boss Jose Mourinho who was also found guilty of evading tax during his time at the Spanish League giants.

The Portuguese tactician spent three years at the Santiago Bernabeu and won three titles for Los Blancos during his reign at the club, but failed to remit KSh 371.2 million.

And the sporting world has not forgotten the tax woes former teammate and five-time Ballon D’or winner Cristiano Ronaldo underwent while still at Madrid before joining Juventus.

In fact, if it is anything to go by, Ronaldo’s decision to hang his boots at the Santiago Bernabeu and head to Italy was heavily influenced by the uncomfortable tax wrangles while at Blanco’s.

Manchester United forward Alexis Sanchez was also in a similar predicament while playing for Barcelona and was accused of defrauding Spanish tax by Spanish authorities.
